Thrust into the spotlight as one of the premiere faces of female boxing after helping Hilary Swank prepare for her role in last year's Best Picture, "Million Dollar Baby," Shea, 24, divides her time pursuing a professional boxing career, working as a personal trainer and attending Iona College as a full-time student. Shea bonded with Swank during their rigorous training and Swank since has attended two of Maureen's NY Golden Glove bouts. She returned the favor when Swank invited her to attend the premiere of “Million Dollar Baby.” The two remain friends and now that Swank has won her second Oscar, Shea hopes to have a successful year of boxing.
As a personal trainer, Shea's main goal is to get her clients physically strong, worrying about their physical appearance later. She is an advocate of agility and speed work, but she believes cardio is a must for everybody. "Most people hate running when they get here, but after I teach them how to run, they love it." When asked what kind of training tips or advice she would give to a woman who was just starting out, Shea stuck by the age-old tradition of perseverance. "I tell them first that it's going to be very awkward," she says. "It won't feel right because it's new, it's a learning process, but soon you'll learn to love it. If you stick with it, what you get out of it in the long run will be great."
